If you’re doing it all yourself, you’ll need to be extremely well organised! The ideal time improve your time management is NOT in the middle of planning a wedding!
Before you do anything else, take time to talk together about what your dream wedding looks like. The ideal event for you might not be the same for your fiancee.
If you’re going to ‘do it yourself’ make sure it’s not all on your shoulders alone. Don’t be too proud to ask for help! Get as much information as you can, ask questions, read books, and try to keep the event planning separate from your emotional investment into the wedding itself. Make lists, create a folder, file or box to keep all your magazine clippings, samples, phone numbers, and scribbled notes in one place.
Unless you’re willing to become a bridezilla on the day, then you really need to have someone to act as your ‘deflector’. This person cannot be a member of your bridal party, nor should it [ideally] be someone in your immediate family, nor even a close friend [feuds have started over lesser things!]. It needs to be someone you can trust, but also someone you can expect to carry out your instructions, completely.
The deflector is the go-to person for your wedding day - anything that needs sorting out, checking up, fixing, paying for, adjusting - your deflector handles it, freeing you up to completely take on the role of bride and groom for the day.
They’ll need to have an excellent understanding of everything you have planned and arranged, in minute detail, and will have the authority to make last minute substitutions, if required.
It’s not so important to choose a ‘theme’ as it is to figure out the non-negotiable things your day will need to be built around – weather and tides may dictate your ceremony time or date, the size of the guest list may influence the venue options [or vice versa]. Once you know what you can’t [or won’t] change, you can create a cohesive event - consistent from start to finish.
Set a budget – and stick to it! Definitely shop around, but remember that price is not the only point of difference: You want to hire the best, most reliable, experienced, and/or most creative wedding product and service providers.
Don’t compromise on the quality of your dressmaker, celebrant, catering, or photographer. You get one chance to get it right – a good reputation, and a proven track record are essential.
Open a savings account and begin making regular deposits. The more you can save now, the less you’ll have to pay off after it’s all over.
Book early. You can give up your deposit if you find a better option, but you don’t want to have to settle for second best because you left it too late.
On the day, if you can be prepared for things not to go exactly as planned. If you can make up your mind ahead of time to laugh at any mishaps, you will be well on your way to having an unforgettably wonderful day.
